Mavericks' Cooper Flagg Exits Game Against Pacers with Shoulder Injury

The reigning Rookie of the Year was sidelined following a hard foul during the first half of Friday's contest in Indianapolis.

The Dallas Mavericks faced a significant setback during their Friday night matchup against the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, as reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a left shoulder injury.

The injury occurred late in the first half while Flagg was driving toward the basket for a potential breakaway dunk. Indiana swingman Aaron Nesmith committed a hard foul from behind, causing Flagg to lose his balance and land awkwardly on his shoulder. The incident immediately escalated into a brief shoving match between players as coaching staffs intervened to restore order.

Officials assessed a flagrant foul against Nesmith, while a double technical foul was issued to both Nesmith and Mavericks guard Naji Marshall. Flagg, who had recorded 14 points, six assists, and five rebounds before his departure, was observed rubbing his shoulder as he headed to the locker room before halftime. He did not return to the court for the second half.

The game marked a highly anticipated return for Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, who played his first official game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in 490 days. Haliburton, who missed the entirety of last season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained during the 2025 NBA Finals, helped lead Indiana to an opening-night victory against the New Orleans Pelicans earlier this week.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle, who previously led the Mavericks for 13 seasons, praised Haliburton’s leadership and impact on the team’s performance. "Tyrese played extremely well," Carlisle noted. "He made huge plays throughout the game, but particularly down the stretch. That kind of competitive presence, leadership, and belief is just something that just bleeds out to everyone."

Entering Friday's game, the Mavericks were looking to recover from a difficult season-opening loss to the Houston Rockets. Despite Flagg’s 32-point performance in that initial defeat, Dallas entered the matchup as underdogs against an Indiana squad dealing with its own roster concerns, including injuries to rotation players Aaron Nesmith and Ben Sheppard, and the absence of T.J. McConnell and Johnny Furphy.
