Meghan Markle Faces Security Pushback Ahead of Australian TV Role

Politicians in Victoria have ruled out using taxpayer funds for the Duchess of Sussex's personal protection during her upcoming 2027 television appearance.

Meghan Markle is facing a political controversy over her upcoming return to Australian television, months before she is scheduled to arrive in Melbourne. The Duchess of Sussex is set to appear as a special guest on "Junior MasterChef Australia" in 2027, but politicians from both sides of Victoria's political divide have reportedly ruled out using taxpayer money to cover her personal security.

The backlash follows Network 10's announcement that Meghan will join Australian celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow on the returning cooking competition. According to Endemol Shine Australia, the Duchess will help guide young contestants through the kitchen challenge. Meghan previously appeared as a guest judge on "MasterChef Australia" earlier in 2026, an experience she described as an easy decision to repeat.

"I had an incredible time with the whole team at MasterChef this past April, so when they approached me to come back and work with this young group of talent, it was an easy yes," Meghan said in a statement, adding that she loves cooking with her own children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

However, her upcoming visit has prompted a firm response from politicians in Victoria, where filming is expected to take place. According to reports from the Herald Sun, both major political parties have stated that public funds will not be used to pay for the Duchess's personal protection. Victoria's Labor government has reportedly indicated it will not fund private security arrangements if it remains in power, while Opposition leader Jess Wilson declared that "not a single cent" of public money should be spent on her protection.

The political stance specifically concerns taxpayer-funded personal security and does not imply that local police would refuse to handle normal public safety duties if large crowds gather. During Meghan and Prince Harry's visit to Australia earlier in 2026, Victoria Police did not provide personal protection for the couple, though officers managed public safety and traffic around their public appearances.

The Australian security debate unfolds as Meghan and Prince Harry spend time overseas with their children amid ongoing media attention surrounding an investigation involving Meghan's estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr. Local authorities are investigating Thomas Sr. following allegations brought forward by his son, Thomas Markle Jr. Meghan released a statement expressing deep distress over the situation and emphasizing that her decision to distance herself from her father was intended to protect her children.

Meghan's new television commitment in Melbourne follows the conclusion of her Netflix lifestyle series, "With Love, Meghan," which ran for two seasons. Filming for "Junior MasterChef Australia" is expected to take place in early to mid-2027, though official production schedules and whether Prince Harry or their children will accompany her have not yet been confirmed.
