Persistent heavy downpours and potential flooding prompt a 21-hour weather alert across several regions of Scotland.

The Met Office has issued a 21-hour yellow weather warning for heavy rain across multiple regions of Scotland as Storm Austen sweeps across the United Kingdom. The alert remains in effect from 6:00 a.m. on Friday until 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, bringing persistent downpours and an increased risk of localized flooding.

Forecasters warn that the adverse weather could lead to disruptions in daily life, noting a small chance that homes and businesses might experience flooding and building damage. Transportation networks are also expected to face challenges, with potential delays or cancellations affecting train and bus services, alongside difficult driving conditions and possible road closures due to standing water and spray.

The severe weather threat extends beyond transportation, as authorities caution that some communities could become temporarily isolated by flooded roads. Additionally, residents should prepare for potential power outages and the temporary loss of essential services in the worst-affected areas.

Heavy precipitation is expected to develop across southern and central Scotland before dawn on Friday, moving into the northeastern parts of the country by late morning and early afternoon. While many affected zones will receive between 20mm and 40mm of rain, the Met Office projects that certain locations could accumulate up to 80mm.

The weather agency advises residents in the impacted regions to check local road conditions, bus timetables, and train schedules before traveling, and to remain prepared to adjust their journeys. Officials also recommend assembling an emergency flood kit and stocking up on supplies, including battery-powered torches and mobile phone power packs, in preparation for possible power failures.

The yellow warning spans numerous local authorities across Scotland, including Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Strathclyde, and South West Scotland and the Lothian Borders. The persistent rain is forecast to turn lighter and eventually clear from the west by Friday evening and overnight.

As Storm Austen drifts away toward the North Sea late Friday, weather agencies report that unsettled conditions will persist. A second, deep area of low pressure is projected to approach the UK over the weekend, bringing further heavy rain, strong winds, and the possibility of snow over higher ground in northern areas.
