Voters across Michigan headed to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, to cast their ballots in the 2026 midterm elections. Citizens are deciding critical leadership positions at both the state and federal levels, including races for governor, secretary of state, attorney general, and a U.S. Senate seat.

Polling locations opened across the state early in the morning and remained accessible until 8 p.m. local time. While the majority of Michigan sits in the Eastern Time Zone, select counties in the western Upper Peninsula operating on Central Time kept their polls open later, wrapping up at 9 p.m. Eastern.

Beyond statewide executive and federal offices, residents are weighing in on local legislative seats for state senators and representatives in Congress. Metro Detroit voters are additionally deciding on local financial measures, including the renewal of the zoo millage and the approval of a Detroit museum millage.

The ballot also features significant statewide initiatives. Voters are casting votes on Proposal 1, which proposes revisions to the state constitution, and Proposal 2, which focuses on removing money from politics.

Unofficial election results are expected to begin trickling in shortly after the final polls close. Election officials noted that early and absentee ballots may be included in the initial reporting batches. Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey estimated that the first wave of results for the city would appear around 8:30 p.m., with 90% to 95% of ballots tallied by 11 p.m.

While some major contest winners may become clear late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, closely contested races could require additional time. Margins and the volume of uncounted ballots will dictate how quickly remaining outcomes are determined. Election-night tallies remain unofficial until county and state election officials complete the official canvassing and certification process in the following weeks.
