Microsoft Announces Voluntary Exit Package for 60,000 Employees Amid AI Investments
The tech giant is offering voluntary separation to eligible staff across four countries as it manages heavy artificial intelligence infrastructure costs and structural workforce adjustments.
Microsoft announced a voluntary exit package targeting approximately 60,000 employees across the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom. The initiative, revealed on Monday, applies to staff at level 70 and below, representing about 27% of the company's total global workforce of 223,000.
Chief Human Resources Officer Amy Coleman explained that the voluntary separation offer includes financial compensation and career planning resources. Eligible employees have until early December to decide whether to accept the offer, with an official departure date set for December 31. The program excludes certain roles, such as data center personnel and specific engineering and marketing teams, ensuring that critical staff required for artificial intelligence development and customer commitments remain with the company.
This initiative follows a series of workforce reductions and voluntary programs at Microsoft over the past year. In April, the company offered voluntary exits to roughly 8,750 employees in the United States. Furthermore, Microsoft eliminated about 4,800 jobs in July, adding to over 15,000 layoffs recorded throughout 2025. Company reports indicate that its global headcount decreased by 5,000 workers during the fiscal year ending in June.
The restructuring efforts coincide with massive capital expenditures directed toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood previously stated that Microsoft's AI infrastructure spending for fiscal 2026 is projected to reach $175 billion, driven by the expansion of data centers and computing capacity to support cloud services for clients like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company reported that its free cash flow for the second quarter of 2026 dropped 23% year-over-year to $19.64 billion.
In parallel with internal workforce changes, Microsoft stock has drawn significant attention from Wall Street analysts ahead of the company's fiscal first-quarter earnings report, scheduled for October 28. Analysts from firms such as Oppenheimer and Truist recently raised their price targets on the equity, citing robust enterprise demand and sustained growth momentum in Azure and Microsoft 365. Consensus estimates compiled from Fiscal.AI project quarterly revenue of $90.75 billion and earnings of $4.72 per share.
Oppenheimer analysts noted that infrastructure availability remains the primary constraint on Azure growth rather than customer demand, predicting an acceleration in cloud revenue as additional capacity comes online. Meanwhile, market data shows varying sentiments across different financial instruments, with short-term futures positioning reflecting caution even as institutional equity coverage remains broadly optimistic.
