Mobile Payment System Bizum Pay Expands to Over 1.7 Million Spanish Stores
The popular peer-to-peer mobile payment tool is now accepted in major physical retailers across Spain as it challenges international giants like Visa and Mastercard.
Bizum Pay, the mobile payment function that allows customers to purchase goods using the Bizum platform, is now available in more than 1.7 million establishments throughout Spain. Major physical retailers such as Inditex, Ikea, Carrefour, Eroski, Alcampo, Burger King, and Lidl have adopted the system, marking a significant expansion for a service originally designed for peer-to-peer money transfers.
Promoted heavily by banks over the years for sending and receiving money between individuals, Bizum has gradually evolved to cover online and physical retail purchases, charitable donations, and tax payments using just a phone number. Financial entities including Ibercaja and BBVA have integrated Bizum Pay into prominent supermarket chains and retail stores, positioning the tool to compete directly with international payment networks like Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
The service operates through a virtual wallet managed via mobile applications, with most major banks having already incorporated the option into their native apps. The platform also allows users to store loyalty cards alongside various other payment methods within a single digital interface. While the tool remains free for consumers, merchants do incur processing costs.
According to reports from financial media, participating banks are establishing individual commission structures designed to offer businesses lower rates than those charged by Visa or Mastercard. Key advantages highlighted for merchants include daily settlements and immediate transfers, which eliminate the standard waiting periods associated with traditional credit and debit card transactions.
Despite these benefits, smaller businesses may face unique challenges. Currently, independent shops reportedly pay significantly higher fees for accepting cards compared to major corporations like Mercadona, El Corte Inglés, or Amazon. Meanwhile, full retail deployment across supermarket chains like Mercadona is rolling out following initial pilot testing in regions such as Soria.
Beyond large retail chains and online platforms like Renfe, Amazon, and MediaMarkt, mobile payment systems are increasingly vital in rural areas where cash access has historically been restricted. In small municipalities where cellular coverage can occasionally falter, local business owners note that digital transactions and platforms like Bizum serve as useful alternatives when customers lack physical currency or loose change, though stable connectivity remains a practical necessity for instant digital payments.
