Monaco Defeats Freiburg 3-0 to Maintain Perfect Record in Conference League
The French side secured a comfortable home victory on Thursday thanks to goals from Paris Brunner, Lamine Camara, and Ansu Fati.
AS Monaco secured a commanding 3-0 victory against German club SC Freiburg on Thursday at the Stade Louis-II during the second round of the UEFA Conference League league phase. Managed by Filipe Luís, the French team controlled the early proceedings and capitalized on individual brilliance and sharp counterattacks to claim their second consecutive win in the tournament.
Despite enjoying more possession in the opening half, Monaco struggled to break down a resilient Freiburg defense. The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time before halftime. Edan Diop connected with Paris Brunner, who executed a skillful sombrero over defender Max Rosenfelder before driving a powerful low left-footed shot past the goalkeeper to open the scoring.
The goal marked Brunner's second strike in two Conference League matches, giving the hosts a crucial psychological advantage heading into the locker room. In the second half, the tactical dynamic shifted significantly as the visitors increased their attacking pressure, dominating possession and mounting numerous corner kicks and shots.
Freiburg pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but the German side lacked the clinical precision required to pierce Monaco's backline. Despite recording significant territorial advantage and numerous set pieces during the second period, the visitors failed to capitalize on their chances.
Monaco weathered the storm and punished their opponents on the counterattack during the closing stages. In the 38th minute of the second half, Ansu Fati broke away and fired a strong shot that was initially stopped by the goalkeeper, allowing Lamine Camara to react quickly and turn the rebound into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Deep into stoppage time, Ansu Fati put the result beyond doubt with an impressive individual effort. Receiving the ball inside the area, the forward spun and struck a curling left-footed shot into the goal, finalizing the scoreline at 3-0 and sealing another clean sheet for the principality club.
With this victory, Monaco climbs to six points in the standings, occupying the sixth position in the league phase with a 100% record after two matches. Conversely, Freiburg experienced its first defeat in the competition, dropping to 18th place with three points.
Looking ahead to upcoming fixtures, Monaco prepares to face Lille in the French championship on Sunday, while Freiburg turns its attention to a challenging matchup against Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga. Both teams will return to European action on November 5.
