The third edition of the Nepal Premier League officially kicked off on Monday at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur, featuring a dominant opening performance by the defending champions, the Lumbini Lions. Facing off against last season's runners-up, the Sudurpaschim Royals, Lumbini bowled out their opponents for just 87 runs in 17.2 overs, setting a modest target of 88 runs to begin their title defense.

Sudurpaschim struggled to build momentum after losing the toss and batting first, losing four wickets within the powerplay alone. Captain Dipendra Singh Airee provided the team's top score with 27 runs off 23 balls, while opener Saif Zaib contributed 13 runs. The rest of the batting lineup collapsed under tight bowling pressure, with four international players failing to make significant impacts.

Kishore Mahato spearheaded the Lumbini bowling attack, securing four wickets while conceding 28 runs in his four overs. Off-spinner Sher Malla delivered a remarkably economical spell, claiming three wickets for just 10 runs across three overs. Additional wickets were taken by Shadley van Schalkwyk, Tilak Bhandari, and team captain Rohit Kumar Paudel.

The match also marked a historic milestone for the tournament, as Sudurpaschim's overseas player Scott Kuggeleijn became the first player in Nepal Premier League history to be dismissed via the Decision Review System. Technology was deployed for the first time in the competition to review and confirm his leg-before-wicket dismissal off Malla.

Organized by the Cricket Association of Nepal, the tournament runs until November 21 and features eight franchise teams: the Lumbini Lions, Sudurpaschim Royals, Biratnagar Kings, Chitwan Rhinos, Karnali Yaks, Janakpur Bolts, Pokhara Avengers, and Kathmandu Gorkhas. This year's competition has drawn notable international stars, including David Warner, Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan, and David Miller.

The tournament's profile received a substantial boost when the International Cricket Council officially recognized the competition in October, ensuring that all player statistics count toward official T20 records. Furthermore, the league has attracted high-profile global broadcasters and commentators, including former international players Shoaib Akhtar and Kevin O'Brien, alongside regional coverage in Nepali and Maithili.

Financial growth has matched the tournament's expanding athletic ambitions. The champion team will receive a prize of 15 million rupees, while runners-up take home 8 million rupees. According to tournament organizers, total financial transactions surrounding the event are projected to reach roughly 1.5 billion rupees, driven by sponsorships, broadcasting rights, ticket sales, and increased commercial investments.
