New York Giants Weigh Options for Running Back Cam Skattebo Ahead of Trade Deadline
Head coach John Harbaugh and the Giants are reportedly exploring trade possibilities for running back Cam Skattebo before the upcoming November 10 deadline.
The New York Giants are reportedly evaluating potential trade scenarios for running back Cam Skattebo as the November 10 trade deadline approaches. Following an offseason marked by various controversies and a recent dip in playing time due to fumbling issues, the coaching staff appears ready to move on from the team's leading rusher if they can secure any draft capital in return.
ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that the new coaching staff has soured on Skattebo, noting that it would not be surprising to see the franchise add an outside talent or provide Tyrone Tracy Jr. with a significantly larger role moving forward. The Giants recently released running back Najee Harris, further highlighting the team's desire to reshape their backfield dynamics.
Skattebo's troubles on the field intensified when a costly fumble contributed to a Week 5 tie against the Washington Commanders. This misstep resulted in him being benched for the entire game during a Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints. When questioned about the benching, head coach John Harbaugh insisted it was not a deliberate design, explaining that the coaching staff wanted to evaluate multiple players by distributing snaps equally among four different running backs.
Despite the friction, analysts suggest that Skattebo still holds some trade value for teams looking for backfield depth. A plausible landing spot could be the Buffalo Bills, a Super Bowl contender that might be willing to part with a Day 3 draft pick—such as a sixth- or seventh-round selection—to acquire Skattebo as a change-of-pace option alongside starter James Cook.
If the Giants fail to complete a trade before the November 10 deadline, the organization may consider releasing Skattebo outright. The running back's relationship with the franchise has been strained since training camp, where his behavior drew public criticism from Harbaugh following an incident in a non-contact practice where he ran over a linebacker.
Reflecting on the training camp incident, Harbaugh did not mince words regarding team culture. "He got a 15-yard penalty at the end of practice," Harbaugh said in August. "Did you see that? Yeah it's infectious. It can be infectious the other way, an infectious disease type of thing. We want it to be in a positive way."
As the Giants navigate a surprising 3-2-1 start to the season and prepare to turn to J.J. McCarthy at quarterback following injuries to Jaxson Dart, management faces crucial roster decisions. Resolving the backfield situation and addressing Skattebo's future will be a key priority for the front office as they look to maintain momentum in a competitive NFC East race.
