New York Rangers Host Philadelphia Flyers in Thursday Night Matchup
The Rangers look to build on a recent victory while the Flyers adjust their lineup for the road.
The New York Rangers are set to host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at home, aiming to capitalize on momentum following a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. The Rangers, who currently hold a 2-5-1 record over their last eight games, are looking to tighten their defensive play and reduce the number of penalties that have hampered their recent outings.
Rangers coach Mike Sullivan expressed concern regarding the team's ongoing issues with stick infractions. Despite the team's penalty-kill unit maintaining a league-leading 90.4% success rate, Sullivan emphasized the need for better discipline. "I think it's a little concerning that the type of stick infractions that we're taking game in and game out," Sullivan said. "That's a conversation we've had in between periods. I gotta think about next steps on that one, but we've gotta do a better job of our responsibility with our sticks."
Rookie goaltender Dylan Garand has been a pivotal figure for the Rangers, having played in the last 11 consecutive games. His 32-save performance against St. Louis was instrumental in snapping a four-game losing streak. Garand noted that he is still learning how to manage the physical and mental demands of a full NHL season, describing the experience as a new challenge.
On the other side of the ice, the Philadelphia Flyers are beginning a five-game road trip. The team has struggled offensively, recording the second-fewest goals in the Eastern Conference. Despite a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild in their most recent game, coach Rick Tocchet pointed to missed scoring opportunities as a primary reason for the defeat. "For me, it's just the missed chances. We had missed opportunities; I think we had nine or 10 scoring chances where we missed the net, and they don't," Tocchet stated.
To address the need for increased speed, the Flyers are experimenting with 22-year-old Cole Knuble at the center position for Thursday's game. Knuble, who has primarily played on the wing since his call-up, previously played center during his college career at Notre Dame. Tocchet explained the tactical shift, noting, "Just speed, I thought like, the second half of the game, that middle speed, I think we need, so just want to try it."
The Rangers have historically performed well against Philadelphia, winning three of their four meetings last season and maintaining a 12-1-2 record over the past 15 encounters. As the Rangers prepare to wear their hometown remix jerseys, they will look to leverage their strong home record, where they have secured seven wins and 14 points so far this season.
