Nigeria's Flamingos Defeat Brazil to Reach First U-17 Women's World Cup Final
The Nigerian youth team secured a historic 3-1 victory in Morocco to advance to their first-ever tournament final against Japan.
Nigeria's under-17 women's national football team, known as the Flamingos, achieved a historic milestone on Wednesday by defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco. Playing at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, the Nigerian side produced a dominant second-half performance after a scoreless and physical first half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 56th minute when Queen Joseph opened the scoring for Nigeria. Aminat Bashiru, also referred to in reports as Awawu Bashiru, extended the lead in the 71st minute and struck again nine minutes later to complete her brace and put the match out of reach. Brazil managed a late consolation goal in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, but the effort was not enough to alter the outcome.
The victory guarantees the Flamingos at least a silver medal and marks their best-ever performance in the competition. Previously, Nigeria's highest finish was a third-place result at the 2022 tournament in India, where they defeated Germany in the third-place match after falling in the semi-finals.
Nigeria's journey to the final required resilience following an opening 2-1 defeat to Poland in Group B. The Flamingos rebounded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico and a notable 3-1 win against defending champions Korea DPR. In the knockout stages, Nigeria eliminated Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16 and edged Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals courtesy of an 89th-minute penalty converted by captain Azeezat Oduntan.
Government officials and sports leaders celebrated the achievement. Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, praised the team's discipline and fighting spirit. "These girls have given Nigerians something special to celebrate. They have shown the world that Nigerian football has a bright future," Adeboye stated.
Brazil, seeking its first appearance in the tournament final after finishing fourth in the previous edition, will now face Korea DPR in the third-place match. The South American squad reached the semi-finals after overcoming Poland on penalties and defeating China 2-1 in the quarter-finals.
The Flamingos will face Japan in the championship match on Saturday, November 7, 2026. Japan earned their spot in the final by defeating Korea DPR 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time during the first semi-final encounter.
