Nintendo Releases Full Remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The classic title returns with modernized gameplay and updated visuals exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo has officially launched a comprehensive remake of the 1998 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. The title, which originally debuted on the Nintendo 64, has been rebuilt to introduce the legendary adventure to a new generation of players while offering long-time fans a modernized experience. The release follows a series of announcements throughout 2026, culminating in the game's arrival on November 5.
The remake retains the core narrative of the original, following the young hero Link as he traverses time to protect the kingdom of Hyrule from the antagonist Ganondorf. While the story remains faithful to the 1998 version, the development team has implemented significant technical and mechanical updates. These include a transition to 60 frames per second, fully redrawn graphics, and the addition of orchestral music. For the first time, cutscenes feature full voice acting, enhancing the cinematic quality of the journey.
Gameplay adjustments have been a primary focus of the modernization. Players now have access to a dedicated jump button and a dash mechanic, departing from the original's automatic jumping system. Furthermore, the camera controls have been refined to allow for greater freedom, and item management has been streamlined to mirror more recent entries in the series. A notable addition is the optional voice-input feature, which allows players to perform Ocarina songs by using the console's microphone.
The development of this project involved a collaborative effort between Nintendo's internal teams and Monolith Soft, the studio known for the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Monolith Soft provided support in areas including design, programming, and graphical development. This partnership builds upon a long history of cooperation between the two companies, which has previously included contributions to titles such as Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.
Initial reception to the remake has been largely positive, with critics highlighting the balance between honoring the original design and incorporating contemporary quality-of-life improvements. Some reviewers have noted minor challenges with the lock-on system during multi-enemy encounters, but the overall consensus points to a successful modernization of a title frequently cited as one of the greatest in video game history. The game is currently available for purchase in both physical and digital formats.
Looking ahead, Nintendo has announced plans for further engagement with the title. Amiibo figures representing Young Link and Young Zelda are scheduled for release in 2027, which will allow players to unlock special masks within the game. As players continue to explore the reimagined Hyrule, the release serves as a significant milestone in the 40th anniversary celebration of the Zelda franchise.
