The No. 10 Utah Utes secured a 21-13 victory over the No. 14 Houston Cougars on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, overcoming a sluggish start to extend their winning streak. With the victory in the high-stakes Big 12 showdown, Utah improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Houston dropped to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12.

Entering the matchup, Houston sought its first road win against a top-10 opponent since 2009 and looked to preserve an all-time undefeated record against the Utes. The Cougars controlled the tempo early, capitalizing on a methodical drive before halftime that resulted in a 24-yard field goal by Jonathan Dimas. Houston expanded its lead in the third quarter when senior running back Makhi Hughes finished off a 15-play, 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run, putting the visitors ahead 10-0.

Utah's offense came alive immediately following the deficit, sparked by quarterback Devon Dampier. Utilizing his legs to find openings in Houston's defense, Dampier answered with a 22-yard scramble into the end zone to cut the deficit to 10-7. Dampier finished the contest with 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, alongside 204 passing yards on 18-of-26 passing, effectively carrying the Utes' offensive output after halftime.

After a field goal from Dimas pushed Houston's lead to 13-7, Utah responded with a decisive 80-yard drive. Running back Wayshawn Parker found the end zone on a five-yard run to give the Utes their first lead at 14-13 with a score early in the fourth quarter. Parker finished the game contributing 47 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards.

Defensively, Utah tightened its grip in the final quarter, shutting out the Cougars and sealing the outcome with crucial late-game pressure. Linebacker Jireh Moe and defensive back Jackson Bennee delivered key sacks in the closing minutes. Bennee came free on a fourth-quarter blitz for a strip-sack of Houston quarterback Conner Weigman, which Moe recovered at the Houston 9-yard line. Dampier scored on the very next play to extend Utah's lead to 21-13.

Houston's offense stalled down the stretch, managing only a pair of punts, a fumble, and a turnover on downs across its four possessions in the fourth quarter. Weigman, who led the Cougars' offense throughout the season, faced intense pressure from the Utah defense and could not orchestrate a late comeback. Wide receiver Amare Thomas provided bright spots for Houston with five receptions for 133 yards, including a 56-yard gain, but the Cougars ultimately fell short in their first top-15 road matchup in 37 years.

The victory preserves Utah's unblemished record as the team navigates the demanding middle stretch of the Big 12 schedule. Head coach Kyle Whittingham's squad will look to build on the momentum of their hard-fought home win as they prepare for upcoming conference opponents.
