Norway's Sovereign Wealth Fund Reports $30 Billion Loss in Third Quarter
The world's largest sovereign wealth fund suffered a negative return on its global investments amid rising interest rates and bond market volatility.
Norway's $2.3 trillion sovereign wealth fund reported a loss of 278 billion Norwegian crowns, equivalent to roughly $29.7 billion to $30 billion, for the third quarter. The fund registered a return of minus 0.5 percent on its global investments during the period.
Managed by Norges Bank Investment Management, the fund holds approximately 1.5 percent of all listed companies worldwide, making it the single largest investor globally. Its portfolio spans roughly 7,100 companies as well as various bonds, real estate, and renewable energy projects.
Trond Grande, the fund's deputy CEO, explained that returns were impacted by broader macroeconomic pressures. "The fund's return was close to flat, ending slightly negative as rising interest rates led to weaker results on our fixed-income investments," Grande said in a statement.
A closer look at the asset classes revealed mixed performance across the portfolio. Fixed-income investments fell by 3.5 percent, serving as the primary driver behind the quarterly decline. In contrast, equities managed a modest gain of 0.5 percent, real estate rose by 0.4 percent, and renewable energy infrastructure delivered a positive return of 7.5 percent.
Within equities, performance varied significantly by sector. Energy companies experienced the strongest growth, while interest-rate-sensitive sectors such as utilities and real estate recorded declines.
The quarterly losses coincided with a wider global bond-market sell-off. During late September and early October, yields in major economies including the United States, France, and Japan surged to multi-decade highs, increasing pressure on fixed-income portfolios worldwide.
