NRL Star Liam Martin Weighs Future Amid Contract Negotiations
The Penrith Panthers forward remains focused on the World Cup while considering potential interest from the Canberra Raiders.
Penrith Panthers second-rower Liam Martin is currently navigating a pivotal period in his career as he enters the final year of his contract. The Kangaroos representative, who has secured four NRL premierships, is eligible to receive offers from rival clubs for the 2028 season, prompting speculation about his future at the foot of the mountains.
While Martin has expressed a clear preference to remain with the Panthers, he has not ruled out a move to the Canberra Raiders. The Temora-raised forward noted that Canberra’s proximity to his hometown and the positive reputation of coach Ricky Stuart make the club an appealing prospect should a deal with Penrith fail to materialize. "I don't know. I'm open to it, obviously close to home and it's pretty interesting," Martin stated. "Penrith would still hopefully be my first option and work out a deal but if not I'd be looking forward to it."
The Raiders appear to have the financial flexibility to pursue a player of Martin's caliber. The club recently withdrew a significant four-year, $4.4 million offer to Hudson Young, who has been linked to a move to the incoming Papua New Guinea Chiefs. This development has shifted the focus toward other high-profile targets as the Raiders look to bolster their roster.
Conversely, a move to the PNG Chiefs seems increasingly unlikely for Martin. His agent, Allan Gainey, indicated that the expansion club’s interest in securing Hudson Young would likely preclude them from pursuing another representative second-rower. Gainey emphasized that his priority is to negotiate with the Panthers first, noting that he wants to give the club every opportunity to retain the 29-year-old before exploring external options.
Penrith is currently managing a complex contract landscape, with several key players, including Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, and Moses Leota, also approaching the end of their current deals. The club is reportedly working to finalize extensions while balancing salary cap constraints. Martin noted that he intends to delay deep-dive negotiations until after his current commitments with the Kangaroos are complete.
"I think they're working through it as quick as they can and trying to get a deal done but there's a bit going on," Martin said regarding the ongoing discussions with Penrith. "I'll wait until after the tournament to sit down and get into the nitty gritty of it." The Kangaroos are currently preparing for a high-stakes World Cup semi-final match against Samoa, which has temporarily diverted the focus of the players involved.
Beyond the financial and professional considerations, Martin jokingly acknowledged that the climate in Canberra might be more suitable for him than the tropical conditions in Papua New Guinea. As he prepares for the upcoming international matches, the veteran forward remains committed to his current team while keeping a pragmatic view of his professional future in the NRL.
