Orange and Sosh Suffer Major Nationwide Mobile Network Outage in France
A significant technical failure left millions of customers across France unable to make calls, send text messages, or access mobile internet data.
A massive nationwide technical failure severely disrupted the mobile network services of French telecommunications provider Orange and its low-cost subsidiary Sosh. The unexpected outage began late Wednesday morning, plunging customers into isolation as standard voice calls, text messaging, and mobile data services became entirely unavailable for both individual and corporate users.
The disruption triggered a massive surge in complaints across tracking platforms such as Downdetector, where reports climbed from a mere handful to nearly 12,000 within a matter of minutes. Major metropolitan areas including Paris, Toulouse, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux experienced widespread impacts, leaving subscribers stranded without reliable communication channels during the middle of the workday.
Emergency call services remained unaffected by the failure, providing a critical safety net while technical teams worked to address the crisis. To maintain basic connectivity, Orange advised affected customers to connect to secure Wi-Fi networks in order to utilize internet services and messaging applications.
While initial speculation arose regarding a potential cyberattack, cybersecurity expert Clément Domingo cited internal sources indicating that the disruption was not the result of a hack. Instead, technical assessments suggested the incident stemmed from a failed core network equipment migration, specifically involving the transition of subscriber lines to a new 5G core infrastructure.
Simultaneously, minor spikes in user reports were logged on tracking sites for competing operators including Free, SFR, and Bouygues Telecom. Industry analysts noted that these smaller increases likely resulted from customers attempting to call unreachable Orange subscribers or experiencing unrelated maintenance issues, rather than a shared infrastructure failure.
By Wednesday evening, Orange confirmed that mobile services, calls, and text messages had been restored to operational status as technical teams continued monitoring network stability. The operator reiterated its apologies to impacted users for the significant inconvenience caused by the outage.
As a commercial gesture to appease frustrated subscribers, Orange announced a temporary compensation plan rather than a direct bill reduction. For a duration of one month, affected customers will receive a doubling of their mobile data allowance, a standard industry measure that nevertheless drew skepticism from consumer advocacy groups.
