Palmeiras booked its ticket to the Copa Libertadores final on Wednesday after overcoming Fluminense in a dramatic penalty shootout at the conclusion of their semifinal series. Despite suffering a 1-0 defeat in the second leg, Palmeiras advanced 5-3 on penalties following a 2-2 aggregate tie.

Fluminense entered the match determined to erase a first-leg deficit, controlling portions of the game and ultimately breaking the deadlock in the 82nd minute when Hércules scored. The late strike leveled the aggregate score at two goals apiece, forcing the match straight into a penalty shootout to decide who would advance.

Goalkeeper Carlos Miguel proved decisive for Palmeiras once again by stopping Fluminense's fourth penalty attempt, taken by Nonato. Marlon Freitas then converted the decisive spot-kick to seal the victory for the team from São Paulo, marking the second consecutive year that Palmeiras has reached the final of South America's most prestigious club tournament.

With the victory, Palmeiras will await the outcome of the other semifinal matchup to discover its opponent for the championship match. The final is scheduled to take place on November 28 at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay, highlighting the ongoing dominance of Brazilian clubs, which have captured the tournament title in each of the last seven years.

The remaining semifinal spot will be decided on Thursday night at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, where Flamengo and Estudiantes de La Plata face off in the second leg of their tie. The series remains completely open following a scoreless draw in the first leg played in La Plata.

Flamengo enters the contest following a 3-0 domestic victory over Bahia that kept them atop the Brazilian league standings. The reigning South American champions will host the Argentine side with key attacking options available, including Jorge Carrascal, as they look to secure another appearance in the tournament final.

Estudiantes arrives in Rio de Janeiro aiming to pull off an upset and return to a continental final for the first time since 2009. The Argentine club recently received a boost with the clearance of defender Marcos Rojo, though head coach Alexander Medina faces tough decisions regarding his starting lineup as his squad looks to keep their continental championship hopes alive.
