Panthers Face Penguins as Goalie Cooper Black Makes Historic NHL Debut
Florida goaltender Cooper Black set a new league height record during Thursday's matchup against Pittsburgh.
Florida Panthers goaltender Cooper Black made history on Thursday night during his team's matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. Standing at 6-foot-9, Black officially became the tallest goaltender to ever appear in a National Hockey League game, surpassing the previous record height of 6-foot-7 shared by Ben Bishop, Mikko Koskinen, Ivan Fedotov, and Mads Søgaard.
The Panthers recalled Black from the American Hockey League on Tuesday after starting goaltender Jacob Markström was sidelined with an upper-body injury. Head coach Paul Maurice expressed confidence in the young netminder ahead of his debut, highlighting his efficiency and athletic movement in the crease. "He looked efficient. He was small in the right way. He wasn't all over the place," Maurice said.
Prior to his NHL debut, Black played three games for the Charlotte Checkers this season, posting a 2-1-0 record with a 2.67 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. He also previously played in the ECHL for the Savannah Ghost Pirates, becoming the 783rd former ECHL player to reach the NHL.
The game against Florida also marked a return to action for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were navigating a difficult stretch both on and off the ice. Earlier in the week, 19-year-old forward Ben Kindel suffered a medical scare when he collapsed on the team's charter flight back from Utah.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas explained that Kindel experienced a vasovagal episode, which causes a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, roughly 10 minutes after departure from Salt Lake City on Tuesday. The flight was forced to turn around for an emergency landing, and Kindel was hospitalized before being cleared to return to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
Kindel was placed on injured reserve alongside veteran forward Bryan Rust, who is sidelined with a lower-body injury and will be re-evaluated in six weeks. To fill the open roster spots, Pittsburgh recalled forward Rutger McGroarty and defenceman Chase Pietila from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Despite the off-ice adversity and a tough 3-6-1 start to the season, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby emphasized the importance of team unity. "I think everyone tries to do their best to support each other and be there," Crosby said. "It's one of those things where they try to make the best of difficult situations. And we're a family here."
