Paris Masters 2026 Kicks Off as Players Battle for ATP Finals Spots
The 40th anniversary of the indoor tennis tournament features top-tier competition and crucial matches in the French capital.
The Paris Masters 2026 tournament is underway at the Plenitude Arena in the French capital, marking the 40th anniversary of the prestigious ATP 1000 indoor event. Running from November 2 through November 8, the competition serves as the final opportunity for tennis players to secure qualification for the lucrative season-ending ATP Finals in Turin later in the month.
Among the opening-round matchups, French wildcard entrant Moise Kouame faced thirteenth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Court Central. The encounter drew significant local attention, with France TV selected to broadcast the match for viewers within France as part of the tournament's opening days.
Elsewhere in the first round, Serbian star Novak Djokovic began his campaign for a record-extending eighth Paris title by overcoming Valentin Vacherot of Monaco in a three-set battle, finishing 6:7 (5), 7:5, 6:1. Djokovic entered the tournament needing a deep run, aiming to reach at least the semi-finals following a second-round exit the previous week in Basel.
American competitor Learner Tien advanced to the second round by defeating Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6:3, 5:7, 7:5. Meanwhile, fellow American Tommy Paul secured a 7:5, 6:4 victory over Denmark's Holger Rune. In another match, Portugal's Nuno Borges eliminated Moise Kouame's compatriot in straight sets, winning 6:3, 6:1.
Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo was forced to retire in his match against France's Arthur Rinderknech during the third set, while Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina triumphed over Andrey Rublev in a tight three-set contest. Quentin Halys also advanced for the host nation by defeating Arthur Fery.
The tournament features top seeds including Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and US Open runner-up Ben Shelton, all of whom earned first-round byes into the second round. Zverev enters the event having already secured the year-end world number one ranking, while Alcaraz looks to regain momentum following a third-round exit in China.
With several top contenders managing injuries or absences, including 2025 champion Jannik Sinner, the remaining spots for the Turin finals remain highly contested. The tournament schedule continues through the week, leading up to the final showdown on Sunday, November 8.
