Patriots Overcome Slow Start to Defeat Dolphins 24-19
Quarterback Drake Maye led a strong second-half comeback for New England, erasing a halftime deficit against Miami and quarterback Malik Willis.
The New England Patriots secured a 24-19 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, overcoming a sluggish first half thanks to a resurgent performance by quarterback Drake Maye. With the win, the Patriots improved their record to 5-3, while the Dolphins dropped to 1-6.
Playing in rainy conditions at Miami Gardens, the Patriots struggled early on offense and defense, falling behind 13-3 by halftime. New England managed only 98 total yards in the first two quarters, while the Dolphins capitalized on solid field position and clock management directed by starting quarterback Malik Willis.
Willis played a solid first half for Miami, completing short- to intermediate-length passes and capping a 70-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Malik Washington just before the break. Despite dealing with a groin injury that limited his rushing effectiveness, Willis kept the Dolphins competitive throughout the afternoon.
However, the second half belonged to Maye and the Patriots. After gaining just 53 passing yards in the opening half, Maye engineered a dramatic turnaround by throwing three second-half touchdowns and rushing for another score. His offensive spark erased the 10-point deficit and put New England firmly in control.
New England's defensive line also applied significant pressure on Willis throughout the game, registering five total sacks and six quarterback hits. Cory Durden and Gabe Jacas each recorded 1.5 sacks for the Patriots defense, which tightened up significantly after the intermission and limited Miami's ground game to 74 rushing yards.
A pivotal moment arrived early in the fourth quarter when a pass from Willis deflected off the helmet of a Patriots defender. Veteran safety Kevin Byard intercepted the ball, setting up a quick two-play drive that ended with Maye connecting with DeMario Douglas for a 48-yard touchdown to extend New England's lead to 24-13.
The Dolphins attempted a late rally when Willis found rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. for a 35-yard touchdown pass with roughly two minutes remaining in regulation, cutting the deficit to 24-19. However, Miami failed to convert the two-point attempt, and running back Rhamondre Stevenson secured the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory for the visitors.
With the loss, Miami continues to search for consistency as Willis shows flashes of strong play despite battling injuries. Meanwhile, the Patriots head back to New England looking to build on Maye's strong momentum despite mounting injuries to key players like tight end Hunter Henry.
