Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Saquon Barkley Returns Against Dallas Cowboys
Saquon Barkley is officially active for Monday Night Football after missing two consecutive games with a hamstring injury.
Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley is set to make his return to the field for Monday Night Football against the rival Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. Barkley had been listed as questionable leading up to the Week 7 matchup after missing the previous two games due to a hamstring injury sustained in the first quarter of the Eagles' Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
After working as a limited participant in practice on Thursday and Friday, Barkley progressed to a full participant on Saturday. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the veteran running back is expected to suit up and play. His return offers a much-needed boost to an Eagles offense that has struggled significantly following a season-ending medical diagnosis for quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was sidelined due to blood clots in his lungs, alongside a hamstring injury to wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
The 2024 Offensive Player of the Year has appeared in four games this season, rushing for 182 yards on 36 carries with an average of 5.1 yards per rush, though he played limited snaps in two of those contests due to a stinger and his subsequent hamstring issue. Meanwhile, the rest of the Eagles running back room has averaged 2.8 yards per rush on 71 attempts, highlighting the stark contrast in efficiency when Barkley is on the field.
Philadelphia enters the prime-time matchup with a 2-4 record and looking to reverse a downward offensive trend. The unit has averaged fewer than 4.0 yards per play over three straight games within a season for the first time since 1999 and ranks worst in the NFL by being out-gained by 108.3 total yards per game. However, the team hopes that Barkley's reintegration, alongside Tanner McKee starting under center, can stabilize the offense against a Dallas defense that has struggled against opposing ground attacks.
Dallas enters the contest having surrendered a league-high 899 rushing yards through its first six games, allowing nearly 150 rushing yards per contest and 4.7 yards per carry. While fantasy football managers and analysts expect Barkley to step right back into a prominent role, questions remain regarding whether he will immediately shoulder a full workload or experience a managed snap count given his recent soft-tissue recovery.
Barkley's return also triggers a shift across the rest of the Philadelphia offensive roster. Running back Dameon Pierce, who handled lead-back duties recently, is expected to see his workload scale back. Additionally, tight end Dallas Goedert and secondary targets benefit from a rushing threat that forces defenses to respect the backfield, opening up intermediate zones and play-action opportunities.
Amid his return to the active lineup, Barkley has also drawn attention off the field. He recently defended Hurts against external criticisms regarding the management of his medical situation, pushing back against narratives that framed the quarterback's relationship with the organization as adversarial. As the Eagles navigate the remainder of the season, maintaining organizational stability remains a key focus.
