Porto Defeats Injury-Plundered Napoli 4-1 in the Champions League
Max Allegri faces mounting pressure after a crushing defeat at Estadio do Dragao leaves Napoli struggling in Europe.
Porto secured a dominant 4-1 victory against a heavily depleted Napoli side during the fourth matchday of the Champions League at Estadio do Dragao. The Portuguese squad capitalized on a late-game collapse by the Italian visitors, lifting themselves off the bottom of their group standings.
Napoli arrived in Portugal facing a severe personnel crisis, missing ten players due to injuries and ineligibility. Head coach Max Allegri was left with only three senior outfield players on the bench, forcing a tactical shift to a 3-5-1-1 formation featuring Kevin De Bruyne supporting Rasmus Hojlund.
The visitors initially showed resilience, managing to reach halftime level at 1-1. Jan Bednarek opened the scoring for Porto with a free header in the 11th minute, but Scott McTominay equalized for Napoli just before the break in the 43rd minute following a build-up involving the Polish central defenders.
The deadlock persisted until the final twenty minutes, when Porto's fresh legs and relentless pressure overwhelmed the tired Italian side. Gabriel Veiga restored the lead for the hosts on a counter-attack in the 26th minute of the second half, before Jakub Kiwior scored a header from a corner kick in the 35th minute. Samu sealed the victory with a penalty in the 45th minute following a red-card offense by Rafa Marin.
Bednarek and Kiwior delivered standout performances for Porto in the heart of the defense. Aside from their goals, both defenders excelled in clearances, duels, and passing accuracy, with Bednarek also contributing to the second-goal build-up by launching a long ball to Santiago Gimenez.
Following the defeat, Allegri pointed to the limitations of his squad and the physical toll of playing high-intensity matches without adequate depth. "We made mistakes on two set plays, the team had in my view a good performance up to the 70th minute," Allegri told Sky Sport Italia, noting that fatigue and a lack of substitutions ultimately proved decisive.
With three defeats in their first four Champions League fixtures, Napoli sits outside the top 24 qualification spots and faces an uphill battle in both domestic and European competitions. Allegri emphasized that the team must regroup quickly for an upcoming domestic match against Lazio as they await the return of injured players during the international break.
