Retired NYPD Detective Charged With Murder in George Washington Bridge Shooting
The fatal shooting of a Con Edison worker on the upper level of the bridge triggered a major traffic shutdown and a swift police investigation.
A retired New York Police Department detective was arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge. The incident, which law enforcement sources believe stemmed from a road rage dispute, occurred just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Authorities identified the suspect as 62-year-old Victor Romero of Haverstraw, New York. Police took Romero into custody on Wednesday at the NYPD's 33rd Precinct after reviewing surveillance footage and utilizing traffic cameras to piece together the events surrounding the shooting.
The victim, 46-year-old Koran Irvine of Valley Cottage, New York, was discovered unconscious in the driver's seat of his blue Volkswagen Golf. Port Authority police responding to reports of a single-car crash found that Irvine had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his right shoulder. Investigators noted that a rear passenger window of the vehicle was shattered with bullet damage.
Emergency responders rushed Irvine to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead. Neighbors and community members described Irvine as a kind family man who lived with his wife and two children, noting his willingness to help those around him.
Utility provider Con Edison released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their employee. "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him," the company stated.
The violent encounter brought massive disruptions to commuters, halting westbound traffic on the upper level of the bridge and causing highway gridlock that stretched from Manhattan into the Bronx. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reopened the lanes approximately five hours later, around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators from the NYPD and the Port Authority are continuing to analyze evidence, including a recovered bullet fragment and ballistics from the scene. Meanwhile, police have placed Romero's home under investigation as the legal proceedings move forward.
