Ron Duguay, the charismatic forward who captured the hearts of New York hockey fans with his smooth skating, scoring touch, and vibrant personality during the late 1970s and 1980s, died on Thursday at the age of 69. His family informed the New York Rangers of his passing following his battle with stage 4 colon cancer, which was diagnosed in 2024 and later spread to other organs.

Selected 13th overall by the Rangers in the 1977 NHL draft, Duguay quickly emerged as a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden. He spent the first six seasons of his 12-year NHL career with New York, helping guide the team to the 1979 Stanley Cup Final, where the Rangers ultimately fell to the Montreal Canadiens in five games.

He achieved his greatest individual milestone during the 1981-82 campaign, earning an NHL All-Star selection and setting a career high with 40 goals. With his signature flowing hair and undeniable offensive flair, Duguay brought a unique sense of showmanship to the league during an era when hockey players rarely crossed over into mainstream celebrity culture.

Over the course of his 12-season NHL career, Duguay skated for the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings. Across 864 regular-season games, he accumulated 274 goals and 346 assists. Beyond his time in the NHL, he also showcased his talents professionally in Germany and various minor leagues.

Following his retirement from professional play, Duguay maintained a close connection to the Rangers organization. He served as a television analyst for MSG Networks from 2007 to 2018, keeping his outgoing presence and familiar style a staple for New York hockey enthusiasts.

In his personal life, Duguay also drew public attention in later years for his relationship with Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee. Following his death, Palin shared a tribute expressing comfort in the belief that he is now with Jesus.

Colleagues and friends across the hockey world remembered him not only as a fierce competitor on the ice, but also as a warm and genuine companion off it. The hockey community mourned the loss of a player whose infectious grin and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Duguay is survived by his children, Shay Thomas, Amber Stavros, and Noah Duguay, along with five grandchildren. Earlier in the year, his family had established efforts to seek financial assistance for his ongoing medical treatments.
