Royal Photographer Arthur Edwards Reflects on Decades Behind the Lens
Veteran photographer Arthur Edwards shares personal anecdotes and memories from his 50 years documenting the British royal family ahead of his upcoming book release.
Longtime royal photographer Arthur Edwards is looking back at a half-century career capturing the British royal family through his camera lens. At 86 years old, Edwards has spent decades documenting historical moments, royal tours, and family milestones, giving him a front-row seat to the lives of generations of royals.
Ahead of the November 5 publication of his new book, "Cup of Tea, Arthur? My Extraordinary 50 Years Photographing the Royal Family," Edwards opened up in interviews about his experiences in the royal fold. Known for his candid perspective, the veteran photojournalist recalled various memorable encounters with different members of the family.
Among his recollections is a lighthearted yet sharp memory from 1986 on a beach in Norfolk involving a young Prince Harry. Edwards remembered observing the princes' nanny giving preferential attention to Prince William, which prompted a protection officer to comfort a two-year-old Harry with a blunt remark while building a sandcastle for him.
Edwards also commented on Prince Harry's explosive memoir and subsequent relocation to the United States. While expressing disapproval of the public tensions between Harry and other senior royals, Edwards shared his perspective on the prince's future, noting his belief that Harry ultimately belongs in his homeland.
Reflecting on his extensive time working alongside King Charles, Edwards described the monarch as a tireless and humble individual who provided him with an extraordinary life and career. Edwards recalled playfully challenging the then-Prince of Wales over his reluctance to accept compliments, highlighting a warm working relationship that has endured for decades.
Edwards' upcoming release promises further behind-the-scenes insights from his remarkable journey as one of the most familiar visual chroniclers of British history, offering readers a unique glimpse into the private world of public royalty.
