Sal Frelick Sparks Milwaukee Brewers' Fall Classic Charge Against Rays
The Gold Glove outfielder delivered a rare power surge and key postseason plays as Milwaukee battles Tampa Bay in the World Series.
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick has emerged as a central catalyst in his team's pursuit of a championship, providing vital offensive sparks during the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Across the hard-fought Fall Classic, Frelick has continually pressured Tampa Bay's pitching staff, highlighted by an unexpected game-tying home run in Game 2 and a crucial scoring run in Game 4.
Frelick's signature moment of the series arrived in Game 2, when Milwaukee was forced to dig out of an early four-run deficit after a difficult first inning. Facing Rays left-handed reliever Ian Seymour in the bottom of the sixth inning, the 26-year-old outfielder battled through a grueling nine-pitch at-bat before launching a fastball over the center-field fence. The solo blast tied the contest at 4-4, igniting the home crowd and wiping away Tampa Bay's early lead.
The blast represented a dramatic power resurgence for the 5-foot-9 outfielder. Frelick had endured a drought of 103 plate appearances without a home run dating back to a July 11 drive off Pittsburgh's Braxton Ashcraft, and he had not hit a homer against a left-handed pitcher since opening day against Chicago White Sox hurler Tyler Gilbert. After driving the ball out, Frelick sprinted around the bases in 18.72 seconds. "I was just pumped to try to get back to the dugout," Frelick said. "I don't hit a lot of home runs, especially to center, so I was happy it went out."
That clutch hit exemplified Milwaukee's relentless approach throughout October, marking the team's second rally from a 4-0 deficit this postseason after completing a similar comeback against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series. Reflecting on the electric atmosphere during Milwaukee's first World Series appearance since 1982, Frelick praised the home crowd. "It's mayhem, and I've never experienced anything like it before," Frelick said. "It's been motivating for all the players." He added that falling behind early does not alter Milwaukee's offensive identity: "Nine innings to play, and it doesn't really change your offensive plan at all. We're trying to go up, take a chunk of the pitcher each at-bat, pass it to the next guy and hopefully that leads to a few runs doing that."
A Boston native who suited up for Italy in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and earned a Gold Glove Award in 2024, Frelick recorded a .230 batting average, 40 RBIs, and just four regular-season home runs. His Game 2 home run set the stage for rookie Cooper Pratt to drive in Brice Turang with a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, locking down a 5-4 triumph behind strong relief outings from Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby to give Milwaukee a 2-0 series advantage.
As the matchup shifted to Tropicana Field, Frelick remained right in the middle of crucial plays. In Game 3, he nearly ignited another rally with a sliced line drive toward the left-field line, only to be robbed when Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson made a full-extension diving grab before crashing into the wall. In Game 4, Frelick set up another breakthrough, reaching base in the fourth inning before scoring on Pratt's two-out double to tie the score at 1-1.
Game 4 developed into a tense, extra-inning thriller featuring home runs from David Hamilton and Pratt. Tampa Bay eventually saved its season following a controversial replay review in the ninth inning that overturned an on-field safe call on Pratt's stolen base attempt. The victory allowed the Rays to force Game 5, setting the stage for more dramatic showdowns as Frelick and the Brewers aim for their first World Series crown.
