Sandro Mamukelashvili delivered a breakout performance off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, tallying 17 points in a 136-129 defeat against the Portland Trail Blazers at Crypto.com Arena. Despite Los Angeles suffering its first loss of the regular season, the 27-year-old Georgian forward emerged as a dynamic reserve, converting 6 of his 9 field goal attempts and keeping the Lakers within striking distance against an undefeated opponent.

Mamukelashvili made an immediate impression late in the second quarter after checking into the contest with Los Angeles holding a slim 53-52 advantage. After tying the score at 66 from the free-throw line, he knocked down two long-range three-pointers in the final 35 seconds of the half, with both shots assisted by Austin Reaves. His second perimeter basket splashed through the net with only 0.3 seconds remaining, sending the Lakers into halftime with a 73-70 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, with Portland holding a 110-106 edge, Mamukelashvili spearheaded a critical response. Within a span of less than two minutes, he scored four points, delivered an assist for a Walker Kessler dunk, blocked a shot by Robert Williams III, and set up a Luka Doncic three-pointer that trimmed Portland's lead to 127-124. When Mamukelashvili was substituted out with 2:07 remaining, the Lakers trailed by only three. He finished 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and posted a team-best plus-minus rating of plus-6 despite the team falling short by seven.

The contest featured immense offensive output on both sides. Doncic led all scorers with 41 points and nine assists, while Reaves contributed 26 points and Kessler chipped in 13. However, Portland countered with balanced scoring to improve to 3-0 under head coach Micah Nori. Ja Morant and Deni Avdija scored 23 points each, Jrue Holiday added 22, and Damian Lillard recorded 21 points, including a decisive three-pointer with 43 seconds remaining that capped a 15-8 closing surge.

Tuesday's showing marked Mamukelashvili's strongest outing since arriving in Los Angeles on a four-year, $52 million free-agent contract signed on July 1, a deal that features a player option in the final season. Selected 54th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Seton Hall, the 6-foot-9 forward previously had stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs before a productive 2025-26 campaign with the Toronto Raptors, where he averaged 11.2 points in 80 games while shooting 38.9 percent from distance.

Through his first four appearances for the Lakers, Mamukelashvili is averaging 9.5 points across 22.8 minutes per game while shooting 59.1 percent from the floor and 5-of-9 from three-point range. Head coach JJ Redick has deployed the Georgian international as an agile connector rather than a stationary post presence. During the preseason, Redick highlighted Mamukelashvili's quick processing and encouraged him to push the fast break after defensive rebounds to accelerate the team's offensive pace.

Mamukelashvili's vision and distribution have also drawn notable praise from his teammates. "I knew what kind of player he was," Doncic remarked. "His ability to handle the ball and see the floor, some of his passes, I think that is very underrated. That's what impressed me the most." With the Lakers managing depth behind Kessler at the center position, Mamukelashvili will look to maintain his strong rotation minutes when the team visits the LA Clippers at the Intuit Dome on Wednesday.
