Sharks Rally in Third Period to Defeat Canucks 3-2
Will Smith scored twice and Mason Marchment added the go-ahead goal as San Jose erased a two-goal deficit on Thursday night.
The San Jose Sharks mounted a dramatic third-period comeback on Thursday night at the SAP Center, scoring three goals in a span of less than three minutes to secure a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. With the win, the Sharks improved to 7-6-1 on the season, snapping a brief two-game losing streak, while the Canucks dropped to 3-11-1.
Vancouver controlled the early momentum and carried a 2-0 lead into the final frame. Drew O'Connor opened the scoring at 13:21 of the first period by crashing the net to knock in a rebound following a wrist shot from Elias Pettersson. The assist extended Pettersson's point streak to six games, during which he has accumulated two goals and five assists.
The Canucks extended their lead late in the second period when Liam Öhgren collected a pass near the right faceoff circle and fired a wrist shot past San Jose goaltender Yaroslav Askarov with just 1:04 remaining on the clock. It marked Öhgren's second consecutive game with a goal and his fourth of the season, giving Vancouver a comfortable cushion heading into the second intermission.
However, the script flipped completely in the third period as the Sharks capitalized on Vancouver's discipline issues and defensive lapses. San Jose head coach Ryan Warsofsky noted that his team simply needed to loosen up and play after starting the period gripping their sticks too tightly.
Will Smith ignited the home team's rally at the 8:00 mark with a power-play wrist shot from the top of the right circle off a feed from Dmitry Orlov. Just over two minutes later, at 10:39, Smith struck again to tie the game 2-2, redirecting a shot from Michael Kesselring that had been touched forward by Macklin Celebrini.
Before the Canucks could regroup, the Sharks struck again just 11 seconds later. Mason Marchment gained control of the puck on the left wing, drove down the boards, and beat Vancouver netminder Leevi Meriläinen with a wrist shot that deflected in off the glove to give San Jose a 3-2 lead.
Vancouver pulled Merilainen late in the game for a 6-on-4 power-play advantage after a crosschecking penalty against Kesselring, but the Canucks failed to convert as the Sharks held on for the win. Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra pointed to recurring issues following the loss, stating that a lack of attention to detail in key moments and faceoff struggles ultimately cost his team the game.
The Canucks will now return home to host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday afternoon, while the Sharks continue their campaign looking to build on their impressive third-period resilience.
