Social Security Administration Announces 3.6% COLA Increase for 2027
More than 76 million Americans will see higher monthly payments starting in January to help offset the impact of inflation.
The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, providing larger monthly payments to more than 76 million Americans nationwide. The adjustment affects retired workers, disabled employees, survivors, and Supplemental Security Income recipients, marking the largest increase in four years.
Annual cost-of-living adjustments are designed to help beneficiaries maintain their purchasing power in the face of rising consumer prices. The calculation is based on federal inflation data from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, tracking consumer price changes during the third quarter of the year.
Under the new adjustment, the average retired worker's monthly benefit will rise by approximately $75, moving from roughly $2,095 to $2,170. For couples where both spouses receive retirement benefits, the average combined payment will increase from $3,238 to $3,355. Meanwhile, the average monthly payment for disabled workers is expected to grow from $1,642 to $1,701.
Supplemental Security Income recipients will also see increases, with the maximum federal payment for an individual rising from $994 to $1,029. The maximum payment for eligible couples will increase from $1,491 to $1,544. Supplemental Security Income payments reflecting the new adjustment will be distributed on December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday.
Most Social Security beneficiaries will begin receiving their increased payments in January 2027. Ahead of the rollout, the Social Security Administration will make personalized adjustment notices available through online my Social Security accounts starting in late November, while unregistered recipients will receive notifications by mail.
Despite the upcoming financial boost, questions remain regarding whether the adjustment will fully cover escalating expenses. Ahead of the announcement, survey data indicated that a significant portion of older adults felt projected adjustments would fall short of covering surging costs for essentials like healthcare and groceries.
Financial experts note that while the extra funds provide necessary support, recipients should review their updated statements carefully. The notices will outline exact monthly payment totals alongside any necessary deductions, such as Medicare premiums, ensuring beneficiaries understand their net income for the coming year.
