South African Rugby Player Hyron Andrews Dies at 31
An autopsy revealed that the Johannesburg Lions lock suffered an aortic rupture on the Isle of Ré.
Hyron Andrews, a lock for the Johannesburg Lions, passed away at the age of 31 on the Isle of Ré in France, according to an announcement made by his South African club. The athlete was discovered in a cardio-respiratory arrest inside his hotel room on the eve of a Champions Cup match against La Rochelle.
An autopsy conducted by French authorities determined that the cause of death was an aortic tear resulting from natural causes, which led to a significant accumulation of blood in the cavity surrounding his heart. The Lions stated in a release that the dissection most likely occurred at the site of an aortic aneurysm.
Despite the tragedy, the Johannesburg franchise proceeded with their match against La Rochelle, which marked the team's first appearance in Europe's premier club competition since South African teams joined during the 2022-2023 season. La Rochelle secured a 31-14 bonus-point victory, but the game's focal point was a moving moment of silence.
Players and substitutes lined up in front of a Lions jersey featuring Andrews' number 5 during the tribute. Furthermore, a spontaneous wave of applause echoed through Stade Marcel Deflandre in his memory during the fifth minute of the game.
Andrews joined the Lions earlier in the summer after spending nine seasons with the Sharks in Durban, followed by a stint with Sale. He was known for his height of 2.03 meters, weight of 108 kilograms, and his expertise in the lineout. The Lions reported that the schedule for repatriating his body has not yet been finalized.
Rugby union traces its origins to the first half of the 19th century at Rugby School in England, where students drafted the initial rules in 1845. The sport expanded globally alongside the British Empire and through French promotion in Europe, eventually becoming professional at its highest level in 1995.
Today, rugby union is governed by World Rugby, which was established in 1886 and currently includes numerous member countries. Major international competitions include the Rugby World Cup held every four years, the Six Nations Championship in Europe, and The Rugby Championship in the Southern Hemisphere.
