SpaceX and Tesla Shares Plummet Following US Midterm Election Results

Market value for Elon Musk's companies dropped significantly as investors anticipate increased regulatory scrutiny under a Democratic-controlled Congress.

Shares of SpaceX and Tesla experienced a sharp decline on Thursday, with the two companies losing a combined market capitalization of over $420 billion following the US midterm elections. The sell-off occurred as Democrats secured control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, fueling investor concerns that Elon Musk’s business empire could face heightened regulatory oversight and potential congressional investigations.

The market reaction was part of a broader downturn in the technology sector, which saw the Nasdaq composite index close down by more than 5.5% on Thursday. Investors are increasingly wary of the future of artificial intelligence development, particularly as newly elected Democratic officials have campaigned on platforms that include stricter regulation of data centers and the AI industry at large.

In Texas, where both SpaceX and Tesla maintain significant operations, the political landscape shifted notably. Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa, who defeated incumbent Greg Abbott, campaigned on a platform that included a proposed moratorium on new data center construction. This policy poses a potential challenge to SpaceX’s expansion plans, which include the development of major AI infrastructure projects, such as a planned supercomputer at the company's Starbase facility and the massive Colossal 3 data center near Brownsville.

Analysts from Deutsche Bank noted that SpaceX could face incremental headwinds due to this changing political environment. The firm suggested that the company's Texas-based compute capacity might be subject to delays, and that capital expenditures could rise as the company works to comply with anticipated stricter regulations regarding water usage, electricity costs, and local oversight of large-scale facilities.

Elon Musk, who contributed nearly $470 million to support Republican candidates during the election cycle, saw his personal net worth decrease by approximately $90 billion over the past week. Despite the losses, he remains the world's wealthiest individual. Musk addressed the election results on his social media platform, X, joking about the failure of his political contributions while also suggesting that the prospect of operating data centers in space might become more appealing given the regulatory challenges on Earth.

Beyond the immediate impact on infrastructure projects, the shift in power in Washington has raised questions about future oversight. Reports indicate that SpaceX has been instructed to preserve records concerning restrictions placed on the military version of its Starlink satellite service in Ukraine. Furthermore, analysts suggest that the new political climate could complicate any potential future merger between SpaceX and Tesla, an idea that Musk has previously discussed but would require significant shareholder and regulatory approval.
