Spanish Royal Family Arrives in Oviedo for the 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofia kicked off the official events in Asturias with the traditional musical concert.
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofia arrived in Oviedo on Thursday to inaugurate the official events surrounding the 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards. The royal family was greeted by enthusiastic crowds and local authorities outside the Principe Felipe Auditorium before attending the traditional opening concert.
The musical performance, organized by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in collaboration with Cajastur, featured the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias and the foundation's choir. Under the direction of Nuno Coelho, the ensemble performed selections from Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 2, accompanied by sopranos Sylvia Schwartz and Pilar Alva-Martin and tenor Santiago Ballerini. The evening concluded with attendees and the royal family standing together to sing the regional anthem, "Asturias, patria querida."
The agenda continues on Friday with a series of traditional receptions at the Hotel de la Reconquista. Notably, Princess Leonor will mark a significant milestone in her institutional journey by holding her first solo audience with the recipients of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards, as well as a joint audience with her sister, Infanta Sofia, for the 2025 University of Oviedo graduates.
Following the morning receptions and a meeting with the foundation's jury presidents and trustees, the formal awards ceremony will take place on Friday evening at the Campoamor Theater. King Felipe VI and Princess Leonor are both scheduled to deliver speeches during the solemn event, which honors international excellence across fields ranging from the arts and sports to scientific research and social sciences.
This year's laureates include American singer and writer Patti Smith for the Arts, Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli for Communication and Humanities, and Argentine footballer Leo Messi for Sports. Additional honorees feature British researchers David Klenerman, Shankar Balasubramanian, and French biophysicist Pascal Mayer for Scientific and Technical Research, alongside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault for International Cooperation.
Further recognition goes to British historian and essayist Timothy Garton Ash for Social Sciences, British writer Julian Barnes for Literature, and American astronaut Christina Koch for Concord. The events will conclude on Saturday in Llanes, where the royal family will present the 2026 Exemplary Town of Asturias Award to the Santa Ana Fishermen's Guild.
