Sporting Defeats Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League Following Coaching Change
Issa Doumbia scored the decisive goal at Stamford Bridge just one day after Sporting dismissed its head coach.
Sporting secured a vital 1-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, bouncing back just a day after parting ways with their head coach. Rui Borges was dismissed on Monday following a sluggish start to the domestic league campaign that left the Portuguese powerhouse sitting in third place, nine points behind league leaders Porto.
Stepping into the role on short notice, interim boss Tiago Fernandes managed just a single training session before taking charge of the squad at Stamford Bridge. Despite the rapid transition, the visitors found the breakthrough in the 59th minute when midfielder Issa Doumbia slotted a smart finish past Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk to secure the advantage.
The Ukrainian champions had several opportunities to get on the scoreboard during a tightly contested match. Brazilian forward Kauã Elias squandered a close-range chance in the first half by sending his effort over the crossbar, and he was later thwarted after the break by a superb save from Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva.
Shakhtar Donetsk continues to navigate logistical challenges stemming from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The club has not played a European fixture at its home ground, the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, since 2014, instead hosting continental matches in Poland, Germany, and Slovenia following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
For the current European campaign, the Ukrainian side is playing its four home Champions League fixtures at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's home stadium was made available because the English club is not participating in European competition this season, providing a familiar venue for Shakhtar's home matches.
Following Tuesday's result, Sporting sits comfortably with three victories from their opening four matches in the tournament. The Portuguese side will look to maintain their momentum and boost their chances of securing a top-eight finish when they face Manchester United on Wednesday, November 25.
Meanwhile, Shakhtar Donetsk holds four points from their first four games of the group phase. The Ukrainian club will return to Stamford Bridge for their next Champions League outing on November 25 to face Fenerbahce as they attempt to advance further in the competition.
