Sri Lanka Pulls Off Historic ODI Chase Against England in Rawalpindi
Pavan Rathnayake leads a record-breaking run chase to overcome a phenomenal double-century by England captain Harry Brook.
Sri Lanka secured a thrilling two-wicket victory over England after successfully chasing down a massive target of 430 during an ODI Tri-Series match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Pakistan. The contest featured the second-highest successful run chase in the history of One Day Internationals, matching the historic intensity of past high-scoring encounters.
England posted a formidable total of 429 for four in their 50 overs, anchored by a historic performance from captain Harry Brook. Brook smashed the fastest double-century in ODI history, reaching 202 runs off 114 deliveries with 21 fours and 10 sixes. His innings eclipsed the previous record set just weeks prior and included a relentless display of aggressive shot-making across all parts of the field.
The English innings also benefited from strong contributions at the top and middle order. Tom Banton continued his consistent form with 50 runs, while Joe Root contributed 69 runs, during which he became the first Englishman to surpass 8,000 career ODI runs. Later in the innings, Will Jacks provided a rapid unbeaten 66 off 30 balls to push England past the 420-run threshold.
In response, Sri Lanka experienced a disastrous start, losing both Kamindu Mendis and captain Kusal Mendis early to be reduced to 24 for two. However, Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake initiated a remarkable recovery by putting together a crucial 166-run partnership for the third wicket to stabilize the innings.
Fernando fell just short of a century, scoring 97 runs, but Rathnayake anchored the chase with a brilliant 130 off 106 balls. Dasun Shanaka provided devastating support from the middle order, blasting 97 runs from just 50 deliveries, which included eight towering sixes, shifting the momentum firmly toward the visiting side.
Despite a late-innings scare orchestrated by English bowler Josh Tongue, who claimed consecutive wickets in the final over, Janith Liyanage held his nerve. Liyanage finished unbeaten on 61 runs off 27 balls, sealing the historic victory with a decisive six and closing the chase at 430 for eight in 49.5 overs.
Reflecting on the remarkable outcome, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis praised the determination and belief shown by his squad. The victory leaves England winless in the ongoing tri-series, which also features host nation Pakistan, following an unforgettable night of high-scoring cricket in Rawalpindi.
