Stamford High School Football Coach Resigns Mid-Game After Confrontations
Donny Panapada stepped down at halftime during a blowout loss to Warde and was later denied a request to rescind his resignation.
Stamford High School head football coach Donny Panapada resigned abruptly during the first half of a game against Warde in Fairfield. Panapada stepped down amid confrontational exchanges with his players while his team faced a steep 30-point deficit at halftime.
According to an email sent to parents by Stamford Principal Matthew Forker, the coach demonstrated poor judgment during the opening half of the matchup. Panapada informed athletic director Chris Passamano and his players of his decision to quit, remaining on site at Warde High School but opting not to coach the remainder of the contest. Stamford ultimately lost the game 42-14, dropping their seasonal record to 3-3.
The following morning, athletic director Passamano met with Panapada, members of the coaching staff, and select players to review the incident. Although Panapada expressed remorse and requested to withdraw his resignation to finish out the season, school administration determined there was no viable path forward for him to resume his duties.
In his communication to families, Principal Forker acknowledged that Panapada maintained the backing of several families who viewed him as a positive influence on their children. Forker emphasized that the coach's prior contributions and relationship-building efforts within the Stamford football program remained valued, even in light of his departure.
However, school leadership stressed that the public nature of the mid-game resignation violated established expectations. Forker stated that a head coach carries the responsibility to lead by example under all circumstances and that confrontational exchanges in front of a large crowd of families fell short of institutional standards.
Panapada had served as the head coach of the Stamford Black Knights since 2022, accumulating an overall record of 16-31. His tenure included guiding the program to the CIAC Class LL playoffs as the seventh seed in 2023, though the team struggled through consecutive 1-9 seasons before experiencing a mixed start this year.
School officials announced that no interim head coach will be appointed to replace Panapada. Instead, the remaining members of the coaching staff will collectively lead the team for the remainder of the season as Stamford prepares to face St. Joseph.
