A strong earthquake struck the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea on Friday, sending tremors across Sicily from Palermo to Messina and prompting immediate emergency responses. The seismic event occurred at approximately 12:19 p.m., following an earlier tremor in the same area about 28 minutes prior. Initial estimates placed the magnitude of the main earthquake between 5.0 and 5.7, with reports of a shallow hypocenter that amplified the shaking felt by residents throughout the region.

The sudden and powerful shaking caused widespread panic among local populations, leading many residents to rush out into the streets. In Palermo, the historic city center experienced severe disruptions as phone lines at the fire department's switchboard were jammed with calls from anxious citizens seeking assistance or reporting concerns.

Educational institutions across the affected region initiated emergency evacuation procedures. At the Giusino school of the Margherita high school in Palermo, roughly 300 students and teachers safely exited the building and gathered in the plaza in front of the cathedral. Another school evacuation was also carried out in the Partanna Mondello area.

The tremors were strongly perceived on surrounding islands as well. On the island of Ustica, local merchant Giuseppe Caminita described the event, saying, "It was very strong and long. The population felt it very strongly even though at the moment there do not seem to be any damages."

Following the seismic activity, the SiAM system issued an orange tsunami advisory for exposed coastal areas along the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. Salvo Cocina, director general of the regional Civil Protection Department, immediately established a state of alert and mobilized operational structures across the affected municipalities, maintaining constant communication with regional president Renato Schifani and the prefectures of Palermo and Messina.

Civil protection volunteer organizations deployed across the territory to assist residents and secure critical areas. Authorities initiated urgent inspections of public buildings, essential infrastructure, and zones vulnerable to tsunami risks, while continuously broadcasting safety guidelines regarding seismic and tsunami preparedness via social media channels.

Preliminary telephone surveys conducted by the regional operations room confirmed that the earthquake was felt extensively across numerous communities in the provinces of Palermo and Messina, including Bagheria, Cefalù, Corleone, Lipari, and Patti. Regional authorities and provincial services continued to monitor the situation closely to assess any potential structural damage or ongoing risks.
