Markus Lanz, a prominent German television host and journalist, recently shared a poignant personal account regarding his encounter with a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks. During a conversation on a podcast hosted by Paul Ronzheimer, Lanz recalled spending a day in the year 2000 with Roko Camaj, the head window cleaner at the World Trade Center. The two men discussed the inherent dangers of the site, specifically referencing the 1993 bombing in the building's parking garage. Lanz recounted that when he asked Camaj about the potential for future attacks, the worker replied, 'Well, that would obviously be my end.'

Following the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Lanz recognized Camaj on television while watching news coverage of the aftermath. He saw Camaj’s son holding a photograph of his father, a moment that left the presenter 'stunned.' Reflecting on the encounter, Lanz described Camaj as an immigrant from Montenegro who had successfully realized the American Dream after moving to the United States in 1969. Lanz noted that Camaj represented the ideal of a country where individuals could achieve success through their own hard work and determination.

This reflection on the American experience serves as a backdrop for Lanz's professional work, including his upcoming documentary, 'Markus Lanz – America Unvarnished: What Comes After Trump?' The film, which is scheduled for release on November 3, examines whether the promise of the American Dream remains valid in the current political and social climate. Lanz suggests that many Americans today have become skeptical of this traditional ideal, questioning if the country still offers the same opportunities for advancement that it once did.

Born in Italy in 1969, Lanz has established a long-standing career in broadcasting. After completing his education in communications, he began his journey in radio before transitioning to television with RTL in the 1990s. Since 2008, he has been a fixture at the public broadcaster ZDF, where he hosts his eponymous talk show. The program is known for addressing current societal and political issues through a grounded and journalistic lens, airing three evenings a week.

In addition to his television hosting duties, Lanz is a frequent contributor to public discourse through various media formats. He co-hosts the weekly podcast 'Lanz & Precht' alongside philosopher Richard David Precht, a collaboration that has garnered over 100 million streams by 2025. The podcast serves as a platform for the two to analyze complex political and social developments, mirroring the analytical approach Lanz takes in his television interviews and documentary productions.

Lanz’s recent programming has continued to focus on critical contemporary issues. A late October 2026 episode of his talk show featured a diverse panel of guests, including a state minister discussing the challenges facing traditional political parties, author Juli Zeh on shifting gender roles, and CNN journalist Frederik Pleitgen, who provided analysis on the United States midterm election strategies. Through these discussions, Lanz continues to facilitate dialogue on the shifting landscape of modern society.
