Telstra Glitch Floods Customer Inboxes With Delayed Missed Call Alerts

A technical problem with the company's MessageBank service caused a sudden wave of delayed notifications to hit mobile phones on Wednesday.

Telstra customers across the country were left baffled on Wednesday evening after their SMS inboxes were suddenly flooded with unexpected missed call and voicemail notifications. The technical glitch prompted numerous users to take to social media platforms, including Reddit and Facebook, to report receiving alerts from contacts who had not recently tried to reach them.

Data from the outage tracking website DownDetector showed a sharp spike in reported problems concerning the major telecommunications provider throughout the day. Many users expressed bewilderment at the timing and nature of the alerts, noting that the notifications arrived even when their contacts were physically nearby or had not communicated with them in days.

One social media user wrote on Reddit that the strange part of the incident was that some of the contacts listed had not spoken or connected with them in days, ruling out the possibility of simply missing an active call or failing to hear the phone ring. Another customer shared on Facebook that she received a missed call text from her daughter while the daughter was standing directly next to her.

Telstra quickly addressed the issue, confirming that a technical malfunction within its MessageBank service was responsible for the erratic behavior. A company spokesperson issued a formal statement apologizing for the confusion and assuring customers that the underlying problem had already been resolved.

The spokesperson explained that affected individuals might see a batch of delayed missed call and voicemail notifications arriving all at once as the system cleared the backlog. The company stated, "We experienced an issue with our MessageBank service earlier today, which has now been fixed. You might notice a number of delayed missed call and voicemail notifications arriving all at once. We're sorry for how confusing this must be."

Despite the widespread confusion caused by the Wednesday evening glitch, Telstra confirmed that emergency services were entirely unaffected. The spokesperson verified that the MessageBank malfunction did not impact Triple Zero calls, standard voice calls, or mobile data connections on the network.

The incident comes months after a major nationwide outage earlier in the year that severely impacted Australians' ability to connect to the Triple Zero emergency hotline. During the July 8 network failure, roughly 45 percent of all calls and data connections were disrupted, preventing hundreds of emergency calls from going through. Fortunately, the telecommunications operator confirmed that no such emergency service disruptions occurred during the recent voicemail notification glitch.
