Jesus de Miguel, a 30-year-old forward for the Spanish second-tier club CD Tenerife, died on Tuesday following a severe on-field collision during a match against FC Andorra. The tragic incident occurred on Monday in the 97th minute, with the score tied at 2-2, prompting the referee to immediately abandon the fixture.

The collision took place when FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono rushed far out of his penalty area near the middle of the field to clear a long ball. Owono leaped to meet the ball and collided with De Miguel, his knee appearing to strike the Tenerife striker's upper chest. De Miguel collapsed motionless onto the pitch as medical staff rushed to his aid, while players from both teams looked on in visible distress. Owono was issued a straight red card for the challenge.

Medical personnel treated De Miguel on the field for over five minutes before he was stretchered off and placed into an ambulance. According to reports, he suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported and required resuscitation by paramedics before being admitted to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Although initially described as stable, his condition worsened, leading to his tragic passing on Tuesday morning.

CD Tenerife released an emotional statement expressing their grief over the loss. The club stated, "Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today."

The football world reacted with widespread shock and sorrow. FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the event "an authentic tragedy," while UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin noted that officials had "searched for words and found only silence." UEFA announced that a moment of silence would be observed prior to all European club matches during the week, and the Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including fixtures in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina.

Tributes also poured in from prominent football figures and clubs across the globe. Former Barcelona defender and FC Andorra co-owner Gerard Pique expressed his sorrow, stating, "I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus." La Liga President Javier Tebas, alongside major clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Arsenal, offered heartfelt condolences to De Miguel's family, teammates, and loved ones during the difficult time.

De Miguel, born in Madrid in 1996, previously enjoyed a standout 2023/24 season with CD Castellon, scoring 16 goals to help earn the club promotion. After moving to Tenerife, he scored 11 goals during the 2025/26 campaign before his career and life were cut short by the tragic accident.
