Voters across Texas are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, to participate in the general election. Polling locations opened at 7:00 a.m. and are scheduled to remain open until 7:00 p.m. local time. Election officials have clarified that any voter who is standing in line at their designated polling place by the 7:00 p.m. cutoff time will be permitted to cast their ballot.

The 2026 general election features several high-profile contests, including the race for the U.S. Senate and the election for the governor of Texas. Residents are also casting votes on various county-level issues and local initiatives. State authorities emphasize that voters should verify their specific polling location before arriving, as sites can vary by county and precinct.

For those voting in person, Texas law requires the presentation of an acceptable form of photo identification. Approved documents include a Texas driver's license, a U.S. passport, a Texas personal identification card, a Texas handgun license, a U.S. military ID with a photo, or a U.S. citizenship certificate with a photo. Generally, these forms of identification must be current or have expired no more than four years prior to the date of voting, though exceptions exist for voters aged 70 and older.

In instances where a voter does not possess an acceptable photo ID and cannot reasonably obtain one, the state provides an alternative procedure. These voters may present a supporting form of identification—such as a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or a valid voter registration certificate—and complete a Reasonable Impediment Declaration. This allows the individual to cast a regular ballot.

Voters who encounter questions or difficulties at the polling place are encouraged to speak with an election worker or judge on-site. If a voter's eligibility or registration status is in question, they may inquire about casting a provisional ballot. Additionally, a voter who arrives without their required identification may choose to leave the polling place and return before the polls close at 7:00 p.m. with the necessary documentation.

For individuals who are voting by mail, the deadline for the return of ballots is strictly regulated. Mail-in ballots must be received by the county Early Voting Clerk by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. Alternatively, ballots postmarked by 7:00 p.m. on November 3 may be accepted if they arrive at the clerk's office by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4. Specific deadlines apply to military and overseas voters, and those with questions regarding their ballot status are advised to contact their local county election office or consult the official state voter portal.
