Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of Duchess Meghan, is currently under investigation by authorities in the Philippines for the alleged possession of child abuse material. The ongoing inquiry follows a report filed by his son, Thomas Markle Jr., who claims to have found the illicit files in storage containers previously used by his father.

The allegations first came to light after the British newspaper The Sun reported the discovery. According to the reporting, Thomas Markle Jr. stated that he found hundreds or possibly thousands of concerning files while reviewing items stored in the Philippines. Disturbed by the findings, he contacted local authorities.

Philippine officials have since taken action in response to the report. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla and Nicolas Ty, an undersecretary in the Department of Justice, confirmed that a specialized unit in Cebu is handling the case. Investigators have seized an 82-year-old computer belonging to Thomas Markle to perform a digital forensics examination, with results anticipated within a week.

Residing currently in the United States, Thomas Markle has strongly denied the accusations. In statements to media outlets, he rejected the claims as "sick lies" and described the situation as the worst possible accusation someone could make against him.

Duchess Meghan revealed that she was first informed of concerning allegations regarding her father in 2018, the same year she married Prince Harry. According to a statement released by the Duchess, a document containing the accusations was sent to the British Metropolitan Police that year and subsequently shared with her.

Explaining her decision to maintain distance from her father, Duchess Meghan stated that the separation was intended to protect her children, Archie and Lilibet, who have never met their grandfather. She added that she had trusted authorities to handle the situation appropriately when she was first notified.

Sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex noted that Meghan could not speak publicly about the allegations when she first learned of them in 2018 to avoid interfering with any potential investigations. The new disclosures add further strain to an already fractured family dynamic, as contact between Meghan and her father broke down prior to her wedding after it was revealed he collaborated with paparazzi photographers for payment.
