Trial Begins in Germany Over Fatal Stabbing in Babenhausen
A 37-year-old man confessed to stabbing his business partner during an argument in February, though he contested the murder charge in court.
The trial for the fatal stabbing of a 27-year-old man in Babenhausen commenced on Friday at the Darmstadt Regional Court, where a 37-year-old defendant stood accused of murder. The tragic incident occurred on February 12 around midday, when the two men were traveling together inside a vehicle near a car dealership parking lot and a filling station along the B26 federal highway.
According to the prosecution, the older man had concealed two knives under his clothing prior to the trip. When the 27-year-old attempted to park the vehicle, the suspect allegedly launched a violent attack from the passenger seat, inflicting multiple stab wounds to the victim's neck. The assailant then reportedly got out of the car and stabbed the victim in the back through the open driver's door with such force that the approximately eight-inch blade broke.
The victim succumbed to his injuries the following day at a clinic. Following the attack, the German suspect, who resided in Stockstadt, contacted the police himself and was taken into custody without offering resistance. The initial proceedings at the Darmstadt Regional Court are scheduled to span five trial dates extending through December 18.
During the court proceedings, the defendant confessed to the physical attack through a statement read aloud by one of his defense attorneys. However, he formally contested the charge of premeditated murder. "I had no decision to kill," he stated in his defense. He explained that panic overtook him when his business partner parked the car, leading him to brandish the knife. During the ensuing physical struggle, he stated that he struck toward the neck area out of a loss of control.
Testimony and statements revealed background details concerning the relationship between the two men, who had previously been friends and business associates. According to the defense, they had jointly brokered real estate loans in exchange for commissions, a venture that involved the use of fraudulent documents. Subsequent charge-backs plunged them into severe financial difficulties, and the defendant claimed he brought the knives for self-protection because he was being taken to meet money lenders on the day of the incident.
The opening day of the trial featured heightened security measures around the courthouse, including parked patrol vehicles and police personnel stationed outside the courtroom. Spectators faced strict security checkpoints where items such as lighters and aerosol deodorants had to be surrendered.
Emotions ran high inside the courtroom when the victim's father took the stand as a witness. He disclosed a volatile development, revealing that a fire had broken out directly in front of his apartment door on the night before the trial started, which his wife noticed and extinguished in time. Authorities have not yet clarified whether the incident is directly linked to the ongoing murder proceedings.
The trial continues with additional witness testimonies, including statements from eyewitnesses who observed the brutal knife attack and administered first aid at the scene, as the court seeks to unravel the circumstances surrounding the fatal dispute.
