Troy Aikman Open to Dallas Cowboys Return Amid ESPN Uncertainty
The Hall of Fame quarterback addressed his expiring contract and a potential front-office role with Jerry Jones.
Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman has stated he is open to a potential return to the Dallas Cowboys as his broadcasting future with ESPN faces uncertainty. Aikman's contract with the network is set to expire following Super Bowl LXI in February 2027. While evaluating his next professional steps, the three-time Super Bowl champion admitted he would find it difficult to turn down a serious opportunity to assist his former team.
“If Jerry came to me and felt in his heart that I could lend some services that would help make them better, I’d have a hard time not taking a good look at that,” Aikman said in an interview published in late October. He noted that he would welcome a conversation with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, emphasizing that their complex relationship is grounded in mutual respect.
The potential for a reunion follows reports of growing tension between Aikman and longtime broadcast partner Joe Buck. After Buck secured a long-term contract extension with ESPN, reports surfaced of a heated disagreement between the two analysts regarding future pairings at the network. Aikman confirmed he will become a free agent at the end of the season and is keeping his options open, which could include broadcasting for another network or transitioning into a front-office role.
Jones recently praised Aikman's qualifications during public remarks, stating that the former quarterback is capable of handling virtually any football-related position. Despite the positive sentiment, any potential organizational role would require fitting into an established Dallas front office where the Jones family and key personnel executives hold significant authority over football operations.
Aikman previously questioned whether Jones would be willing to share enough authority for an outside executive to effectively reshape the team. In 2019, he described the possibility of becoming the Cowboys' general manager as a long shot due to Jones remaining steadfastly in charge of football decisions. Whether a meaningful advisory or operational role could be structured remains uncertain.
Beyond a possible return to Dallas, Aikman has explored other avenues within football operations, having previously served as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins during their general manager and head coach searches. As he approaches the final stretch of his broadcasting contract, Aikman described himself as open for business while evaluating how he wants to spend the next stage of his career.
