TUI Cruise Ship Mein Schiff 3 Collides With Container Vessels in Germany

A strong gust of wind in the port of Bremerhaven forced the cancellation of a 20-day voyage to the Canary Islands.

A TUI cruise ship carrying more than 3,300 passengers and crew collided with two container vessels while departing from the northern German port of Bremerhaven, prompting an official investigation into the captain. The accident occurred on a Sunday evening as Mein Schiff 3 was setting out on a scheduled 20-day voyage to the Canary Islands.

According to local police, a strong gust of wind pushed the cruise ship toward two container ships moored alongside the harbor wall. Despite being accompanied by tugboats in choppy waters, the vessel drifted off course and struck both neighboring ships. Authorities stated that administrative offense proceedings had been initiated against the captain to determine if a breach of duty of care occurred.

The collision caused significant damage across the involved vessels. One of the container ships sustained severe structural harm, with its port side torn open over a length of several meters and its container guides deformed, while the second container ship suffered minor impacts. Mein Schiff 3 also incurred substantial damage, including crushed on-board lifeboats and launching equipment.

German authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among the 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members on board the cruise ship, nor among individuals on the container vessels. Additionally, no water entered the ships because the damage occurred several meters above the water line. Following the incident, all three vessels were barred from leaving the port while police and technical experts evaluated the multi-million-dollar property damage.

Following overnight evaluations, TUI Cruises announced the cancellation of the Canary Islands cruise on Monday. The operator stated that the cruise ship requires urgent repair work at a shipyard before it can safely resume operations. Technical teams and experts are extensively investigating the extent of the structural issues to understand how future itineraries might be affected.

TUI expressed regret over the disruption and stated that it would support affected passengers with their next steps. The company emphasized that passenger, crew, and vessel safety remains its top priority, though specific details regarding refunds or compensation have not yet been publicly disclosed by the operator.

Transportation and travel experts noted that unexpected itinerary disruptions highlight the value of travel insurance for vacationers. While cruise lines typically refund cancelled trips, policies can assist travelers in recovering nonrefundable expenses such as prepaid flights and alternative lodging arrangements resulting from sudden marine accidents.
