Union Saint-Gilloise Defeats Celta Vigo 2-1 in Europa League Clash
Besfort Zeneli scored twice to secure a comeback victory for the Belgian side at Estadio Balaídos.
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise continued their impressive run in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, securing a 2-1 victory over Spanish side Celta Vigo at Estadio Balaídos. The win maintained the Belgian club's unbeaten status in the competition, further solidifying their position in the group stage standings.
The match began with Celta Vigo taking an early lead. Pablo Duran put the hosts ahead after a solo run resulted in a strike that bypassed Union goalkeeper Hervé Koffi. Despite the early setback, the visitors remained composed and gradually increased their pressure on the Celta defense throughout the first half.
Union Saint-Gilloise leveled the score in the 35th minute when Besfort Zeneli converted a pass from Adem Zorgane during a one-on-one opportunity. The momentum shifted in favor of the visitors shortly after the halftime break, as Zeneli struck again five minutes into the second half to put his team in the lead. The goal was subsequently reviewed and confirmed by the Video Assistant Referee.
Celta Vigo attempted to respond throughout the second half, with substitute Iago Aspas creating a significant chance for Duran, whose effort narrowly missed the post. The Spanish side struggled to find an equalizer as the match progressed, despite their efforts to regain control of the tempo.
The visitors had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 78th minute after Relebohile Mofokeng drew a penalty following a VAR check for a handball by Javier Rodriguez. However, Zeneli was unable to complete his hat-trick, as his spot-kick struck the upright. Mofokeng, who played a key role in the midfield throughout the match, was substituted shortly after the incident.
The result marks a significant achievement for Union Saint-Gilloise, who entered the match following a 4-0 victory over Hapoel Be'er-Sheva. Conversely, Celta Vigo looked to build on their previous 2-1 European win against Celtic but were unable to overcome the disciplined performance of the Belgian squad. Both teams now turn their attention to their respective domestic league schedules as they continue their seasons.
