University of South Florida Football Coach Brian Hartline Emerges as Maryland Candidate

As the University of Maryland searches for a permanent head coach following Mike Locksley's firing, USF's Brian Hartline has drawn strong interest despite limited experience.

The University of Maryland is currently conducting a football coaching search following the firing of Mike Locksley. With interim head coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim leading the Terrapins to a 2-6 record after a recent 20-17 loss to Illinois, athletic department officials are evaluating potential candidates to revitalize the program.

Among the more intriguing names linked to the job is University of South Florida head coach Brian Hartline. At 39 years old, Hartline has built a notable reputation through his extensive work recruiting and developing elite wide receivers during his tenure at Ohio State, where he coached standout NFL talents such as Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, and Marvin Harrison Jr.

Hartline has led the Bulls to a 6-2 start following a 30-10 victory over UAB. His candidacy presents clear potential for Maryland, offering a young leader with significant Big Ten experience, strong recruiting credentials, and familiarity with the conference's competitive standards.

However, analysts have noted that Hartline's overall head coaching resume remains short on experience, with only eight games managed at the collegiate level. Furthermore, questions surrounding USF's offensive output against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents and his capacity to independently direct an entire program pose legitimate concerns for a major conference opening.

If Maryland ultimately pursues Hartline, his prior connections could facilitate a rapid transition. Among potential roster additions, former St. Frances Academy quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr., currently playing under Hartline at USF with starting experience at Mississippi State and LSU, stands out as a notable dual-threat option with remaining eligibility.

Additionally, wide receiver Bryson Rodgers and running back Jason Collins Jr. represent familiar personnel who could evaluate their options if they entered the transfer portal. USF running backs coach Elijah Brooks, who previously coached at Maryland and led DeMatha's high school program, also provides a strong local connection on Hartline's staff.

Maryland athletic director Jim Smith, who previously led Ohio State's alumni association during Hartline's early coaching years, maintains professional overlap that could factor into the evaluation process. While hiring Hartline would represent a considerable gamble for the Terrapins, his ceiling offers substantial upside if he can successfully translate his developmental success to leading a Power Four program.
