Upsets Mark Second Round at Rolex Paris Masters as Top Seeds Fall
A series of major surprises shook up the tournament in Nanterre, highlighted by Novak Djokovic's elimination.
The Rolex Paris Masters saw a dramatic day of competition on Wednesday as several top seeds, including seven-time champion Novak Djokovic, were knocked out in the second round. The tournament, being held at the La Defense Arena in Nanterre for the first time, turned into a day of unexpected results for many of the sport's leading contenders.
Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata pulled off the biggest shock of the event by defeating Djokovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. After dropping a dominant first set, the 83rd-ranked Hijikata turned the match around by finding his rhythm on his serve and increasing his aggression from the baseline. "It took a lot; I was getting outplayed for the first set and a little bit," Hijikata remarked after securing the victory.
The loss carries significant consequences for Djokovic, who entered the tournament needing a deep run to secure a spot in the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin. With this defeat, the Serbian star is officially out of contention for the season-ending championship for the first time since 2017. Analysts noted that despite the loss, Djokovic played solidly, but Hijikata elevated his level remarkably across the final two sets, striking numerous winners off his forehand side.
Djokovic was far from the only high-profile player to exit the tournament during the chaotic Wednesday schedule. Newly crowned world No. 1 Alexander Zverev suffered a straight-sets defeat to Lorenzo Musetti, losing 7-6(5), 6-2. Zverev had already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking earlier in the week.
Other notable casualties included fourth seed Daniil Medvedev, who fell in straight sets to Peru's Ignacio Buse, and eighth seed Alex de Minaur, who was beaten by Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Additionally, Frances Tiafoe squandered four match points before losing a tight three-set battle to Quentin Halys.
Amid the wave of upsets, several players advanced successfully through the draw. Luca Van Assche secured a straight-sets victory over 15th seed Learner Tien, winning 7-6(4), 6-4. Meanwhile, Halys's dramatic win officially qualified Arthur Fils for the ATP Finals, making him the first Frenchman to reach the year-end tournament since Gael Monfils in 2016.
Hijikata will continue his impressive run at the Paris Masters on Thursday, November 5, when he faces Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round. The winner could potentially face either Lorenzo Musetti or Luca Van Assche in the quarter-finals as the tournament progresses toward its final weekend.
