Veteran Italian journalist and former war correspondent Toni Capuozzo announced publicly that he has been diagnosed with cancer. The 77-year-old reporter shared the personal news through a social media post accompanied by a photograph of himself alongside the hospital medical staff who are currently treating him.

Capuozzo explained that he decided to address the situation openly to stop medical gossip and speculation surrounding his well-being. While keeping specific details regarding his medical condition private, he stated that he cherishes his privacy and finds health-related rumors unbearable.

“I love privacy enough and find health gossip quite unbearable to make me say without hesitation: yes, I have a tumor,” the journalist wrote in his post. He added that he intends to face the challenge with the assistance of his doctors and the support of his loved ones.

Reflecting on his life and diagnosis, Capuozzo noted that he had unknowingly settled accounts with his life prior to learning of the illness. This remark referred to his recent appearance on a podcast hosted by Luca Zaia, which was released just days before his public announcement.

During the podcast interview, the journalist looked back at his personal history, covering his origins in Friuli, his early political involvement during his youth, and his extensive career in newsrooms reporting on global conflicts. His past reporting includes covering the siege of Sarajevo, as well as conflicts in Somalia, the Middle East, and Afghanistan.

Following the announcement, regional official Luca Zaia expressed public support and affection for the journalist, encouraging him to stay strong and noting that they still have many things to discuss and share.

Capuozzo began his professional journalism career in 1979, writing for various publications before serving as deputy director of TG5 and editing and hosting the television program Terra! over the course of his decades-long career in broadcasting.
