Viral Prank Backfires as Strangers Raise Over $170,000 for Harassed Worker
A social media prank targeting a Michigan grocery store employee sparked widespread online backlash and generated massive financial support for the father of four.
A social media prank intended to generate online views backfired drastically after an unsuspecting grocery store employee in Michigan reacted with frustration to being filmed against his will. The incident, which circulated widely across multiple platforms, quickly transformed from an online controversy into a massive fundraising effort, drawing donations exceeding $170,000 for the hardworking father.
The viral video showed a content creator approaching Walt Z., a supermarket worker who was busy restocking shelves with Red Baron frozen pizzas. The prankster pulled out his phone and simulated a payment using a fake Apple Pay sound and animation, falsely acting as though he had taken money from the employee. When the worker realized he was being recorded and that the stunt was a joke, his frustration boiled over.
Visibly exhausted and visibly distressed, the employee made it clear that he did not appreciate being the subject of online entertainment. He explained to the creators that his shift had already stretched past its scheduled end, that he was missing time with his four children, and that he had to wake up early the following morning to service multiple other locations. "My life is hard enough as it is, okay? I don’t need this crap," he stated in the footage.
The confrontation intensified when the worker pointed out the harsh realities of his daily life, noting that the creators likely profited from such videos while ordinary people struggled to make ends meet. "You’re probably making money off this. I can’t even pay my mortgage, and I got four kids at home," he told them. Although the creators eventually left and the original video was subsequently taken down following intense backlash, the footage continued to spread across networks like X and Reddit.
The clip drew sharp criticism from internet users who condemned prank culture for turning ordinary, working-class individuals into unwilling participants in online stunts. Viewers expressed deep sympathy for the employee, emphasizing the immense financial and personal pressures faced by families attempting to navigate difficult economic conditions. Commentators argued that targeting people who are simply trying to do their jobs and provide for their households crosses a clear line.
In response to the video, an individual named Luke Oakenshield launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the worker and provide financial breathing room. Initially seeking to help cover basic bills and offer a safety net in case the controversy jeopardized the employee's job, the fundraiser snowballed rapidly as donations poured in from sympathetic strangers across the country.
Prominent online figures, including conservative commentator Benny Johnson, amplified the campaign, helping drive contributions past the $170,000 mark. Oakenshield later confirmed via social media that he had successfully contacted the worker and verified his identity with the assistance of his workplace management. While the family has requested privacy moving forward, supporters celebrated the outcome as a positive conclusion to an otherwise unfortunate encounter.
