The Indian batting star recorded his 80th ODI half-century and a spectacular catch as India secured a five-wicket victory in Auckland.

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli delivered a commanding performance on the eve of his 38th birthday, scoring 74 runs off 51 deliveries to guide India to a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI at Eden Park in Auckland. Facing challenging batting conditions characterized by unexpected bounce and pace, Kohli handled short deliveries with ease and received a standing ovation from the crowd as he walked off the field.

The veteran batter's latest innings marked multiple historic statistical milestones in the 50-over format. Kohli officially became the first batter in cricket history to accumulate 13,000 ODI runs at the No. 3 batting position, finishing the match with a career total of 13,062 runs at the spot. His average of 61.61 at No. 3 places him ahead of legendary peers like Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara.

Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the leading run-scorer in overall ODI chases, reaching 8,741 runs at an average of 66.21. Furthermore, his exceptional average of 89.95 across 108 successful ODI run chases continues to underscore his reputation as one of the finest match-winners in the history of the sport. His overall ODI record now stands at 15,183 runs with 55 centuries and 80 half-centuries.

The milestone performance extends an impressive run of form for Kohli since his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025. Across his last 16 ODI innings, he has accumulated 1,002 runs at an average of 77.07, registering ten scores of fifty or more. Analysts and supporters noted that his performance against short-pitched bowling in Auckland highlighted his enduring technical precision and control.

In addition to his batting masterclass, Kohli made a vital contribution in the field during New Zealand's innings. He executed a spectacular one-handed diving catch at second slip off bowler Anshul Kamboj to dismiss Nathan Smith for just one run. The athletic catch required a third-umpire review to confirm control just above the turf, adding another highlight to India's defensive effort.

New Zealand was ultimately bowled out for 185 runs in 40.2 overs, anchored by Arshdeep Singh's four wickets and Gurnoor Brar's three dismissals. Following rain interruptions that adjusted the target under the DLS method, India successfully reached 143 for 5 in 22.4 overs. Captain Shubman Gill added 37 runs to support the chase, handing India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series as preparations continue toward the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.
